Violent Wind, Rain of Fire

May 21, 2010

Dear sisters and brothers,

Are you ready for it? According to BibleGateway.com:

This Sunday, Christian churches around the world will commemorate Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended to empower the apostles of Jesus Christ. It was a foundational moment for the fledgling Christian church, and it still holds significance for Christians nearly 2000 years later.

Pentecost fulfilled Jesus’ promise to send the Holy Spirit to empower the church. Jesus’ promise, and the multilingual nature of Pentecost, made it clear that the Gospel of Jesus Christ was meant to be shared with all people, regardless of language or culture. And Peter’s sermon at Pentecost continues to serve as a blueprint for witnessing and evangelism to this day.

If it’s been a while since you’ve thought about the events of Pentecost, this weekend is a good opportunity to re-acquaint yourself with this miraculous event!

Canaan’s English ministry has gone through so much this past year. We still need more healing and restoration. But we are also entering a new phase in our story. As Canaan prepares to celebrate Pentecost this Sunday, could you join me in wishing the Church of Jesus Christ a Happy Birthday! Here’s how:

1. Wear red clothing or attach something red to your clothing this Sunday. The flame of Pentecost is symbolized by the color red. I would love to see a sea of red in the worship hall this Sunday!
2. Pray with great expectation. I believe that the power of the Holy Spirit will descend upon us this summer as we reboot our service to the Lord. We don’t necessarily have to speak in different tongues, but I anticipate a renewal of enthusiasm, power, and joy as God rebuilds us.
3. Begin to see the future with fresh eyes. Canaan’s future and yours will intersect in the days ahead. There will be exciting new activities and opportunities at the church. I hope and pray that these new activities and opportunities will also fulfill God’s promise of abundance, satisfaction, and joy in your own life!

Blessings,
Tim

  1. Pastor Tim – thanks for the focus on Pentecost and your creative way to celebrate it in a tangible way by wearing red. That will enhance the multi-sensory dimension of worship.

It was great to visit your church in March in conjunction with the South East Asian Leadership conference.

May you continue to be used of the Lord in the local church ministry there.
