Silly Love Songs

Feb 14, 2011

Dear Canaan EMers,

After the Beatles broke up, John Lennon became a social activist while Paul McCartney continued to write love songs. McCartney was teased by Lennon and other music critics for writing “lightweight songs.” In response, McCartney wrote “Silly Love Songs” (1976) where he asks “What’s wrong with that? Cause here I go again!”

“Silly Love Songs” was lightweight, especially in the face of serious social and spiritual crises in the world then. Our world continues to face disquieting and uncertain dangers. It would be tempting to constantly focus on our Christian responsibility to be God’s agents of righteousness and healing. But I think McCartney has an important point. To be human is to explore the depth of our feelings, especially love. To be Christian is to take this one step further and engage the love of Christ in our personal relationships, our faith community, and with our neighbors, enemies, and world.

Feeling love may seem silly when there are so many pressing needs today. But the wonderful irony is this: when Christians are able to demonstrate emotional competence and health through loving as Christ loved, we are taking the first step towards redeeming God’s Creation!

That’s why it’s so important to celebrate. If you haven’t received an Evite to the First Annual Canaan Awards (Friday, March 11, 7-10 PM), please let Chris Su [email Chris] know right away. It will be a silly, fun, parody of the Grammy and Oscars – but we’ll also celebrate how God has worked among us this past year. So come and enjoy the Red Carpet treatment!

Also, I encourage everyone to find joy in growing spiritually. I’ve created a new resource page on our website [canaanpromise.wordpress.com/resources/] Information about the books that are available for sale each Sunday can be found there. Also, I’ve added a couple of free resources (my Valentine gift to you):
1. Discouragement: Reasons and Answers by K. P. Yohannan, Founder and President of Gospel for Asia (www.gfa.org). This is a very helpful little book that provides simple and clear approaches to overcoming discouragement from a Christian perspective. Yohannan is also a keynote speaker at the upcoming BASS Convention.
2. A Lenten Devotional Guide based on Jim Wallis’ book Rediscovering Values.

Wishing you and your loved ones a Happy Valentine!

Tim
