Dear Canaan EMers and friends,
It’s gonna’ be a great weekend! Not only will we celebrate father’s day, many of us will be learning and relaxing at our All Church retreat. I’ve updated the English/Youth retreat schedule here: canaanem.org/retreat-2011/. On Friday, check in at Cooperage between 3:00 – 5:30. Dinner will be served at 6:45 PM at Zinfindel. Amos and Aizaiah are primed and ready to challenge and inspire us all!
This past Monday, I had the privilege to be the opening keynote speaker at the inaugural conference for the Asian American Ministry program at Seattle Pacific University’s School of Theology. [see link]
The conference was the second national gathering of Asian American evangelical theological educators and pastors; the first was held at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School three years ago. I’m grateful to be numbered among Asian American leaders such as Ken Fong, Peter Cha, Soong Chan Rah, Eugene Cho, and several others.
My keynote address, “Resident Aliens from a Different Shore,” was an introduction to the lives of four significant Asian American church leaders during periods of racial segregation and the Civil Rights era in the United States. By looking through the eyes of these leaders, I hoped to encourage future Asian American leaders to better navigate the muddied waters of multicultural diversity today.
Conferences like these help keep pastors and equippers sharp and better able to lead their ministries. It is my hope that Canaan will raise up layleaders (and future ministers) who are so deeply in love with Christ and his Church that they would want to dedicate energy and time to learn more theology and biblical studies.
Indeed, tonight, Dr. Amos Yong’s presentation at Canaan, “Asian American Evangelical Theology,” is an excellent opportunity for us to go much deeper in our knowledge and faith. So if you have time, come to Worship Hall 2 at 7:30! (we don’t anticipate a large audience, so the room may change)
Finally, I’d like to congratulate our graduating high school seniors again! I hope that all of us can meet for a meal before everyone heads off to college. I want to give a book to them called One.Life: Jesus Calls, We Follow, by Scot McKnight. McKnight is a Bible professor at North Park College in Chicago and is fast becoming one of my favorite bloggers/writers/scholars. You can keep up with him at: http://www.patheos.com/community/jesuscreed/. One.Life is a wonderful book for Christian young adults who want to more fully embrace their calling as followers of Jesus. So don’t leave for college before I give you this book!

P.S. On Sunday, June 26, I’ll lead an “Introduction to Canaan” class at 9:45 AM in the Conference Room (102). This class is for people who are interested in becoming new members or baptized. The next opportunity for baptism and to join Canaan will be August 14th. Please let me know if you are interested! [Email me]
