The Logic of Renewal

September 13, 2012

Greetings Canaan EM’ers and friends,

During last Sunday’s adult second hour workshop, I revealed that I did not believe that God would destroy all of creation when Jesus returns again. I’m grateful that no one left the room (or at least no one was “raptured”)! While I believe that there will be accountability for sin and evil, my reading of the Bible affirms that God will make all things new without destroying His original work of creation. In fact, as biblical scholar N.T. Wright suggests, at Christ’s resurrection, the Kingdom of God has been inaugurated. Fallen Creation is now being restored and renewed. And we are all part of this march towards the New Creation.

What this means is that politics and work, regardless of how much we detest them, are redeemable. Even though there is salvation for us after we die, escape from this world into heaven or our private lives is not part of the gospel! Neither is shielding ourselves from the problems of this world. Christian citizens have a responsibility to help transform our government and other institutions to look and act like they ought in the New Creation. We have a responsibility to create life-giving cultures and organizations. We have a responsibility to overcome injustice and evil with good.

During this Sunday’s second hour, Nelson Lu and I would like to invite you to walk through the 2012 American election issues with eyes of Christian faith. Join us as we journey to becoming salt and light for the world!

Small Groups Are Flying High!

Our adult small group ministry is picking up steam! Almost all our adults have joined a small group. There are still a few small groups that can add more members (we’ve capped the number of participants to 12 adults per small group). Please let me know if you are interested in joining a group!

Farewell to Silverwood Service – cancelled

Last week, I mentioned that I was planning to organize a short English service to bid farewell to our church’s old site at Silverwood Avenue in Mountain View on Saturday, Oct. 13. But after reviewing all of the exciting activities that are being scheduled, I would like to cancel this event.

For example, a Praise Band/Worship Arts micro-retreat is being planned. So is a Small Group Leaders meeting and Large Group Fellowship meetings for our Young Adults and Marriage/Family ministries. Finally, the English and Youth Leadership Teams are scheduling an end-of-the year Leadership retreat. All of these rank higher in my priority at the moment.

So if there are no major objections, let’s cancel the “Farewell to Silverwood” service.

Sign up to provide refreshments for pre-worship snack time

We especially would like to invite our youth and young adults to provide refreshments. Youth can ask their parents to help them buy their favorite snack items! You (or your parents) will be reimbursed or receive a donation receipt. Sign up at http://bit.ly/emworship12 Contact Deacon James Chang for more details.
