Happy Monday, Canaan English ministries and friends,
I’m sending this early (and brief) update to give you the heads up about an exciting Sunday coming! We will celebrate Father’s Day, commission and raise funds/awareness for our summer missionaries. Bring the entire family! Here goes…
Dear Canaan families,
Father’s Day is this coming Sunday. I would like to make a slideshow and dedicate it to all the fathers. Please send photos to me by Thursday night.
2. Thank you all who attended yesterday’s second hour with Darren Oei!
Talking openly about sexuality – especially homosexuality – is very difficult for Asian American Christians. But we must, if we are to reach the minds and hearts of the current generation with the gospel. I’m proud of all of you who engaged Darren and wrestled with the challenge of being a disciple in our society. Let me know if you want to discuss this matter with me in a safe environment or would like to follow up on the conversation. Darren also welcomes your thoughts and support. He can be reached here
3. This Sunday, part 1 “In the Hands of a Woman” (Judges 4:1-10)
It may seem strange to hear a sermon about Deborah, a woman judge of Israel, on Father’s Day. Well, it is strange. But come and find out if it can be done!
Speaking of powerful women, let us pause for a moment and thank God for the life and testimony of Elisabeth Elliot, one of the most influential Christian woman of the 20th century. The venerable missionary, author, and speaker passed away yesterday. Here is her obituary in Christianity Today and a wonderful tribute in Today’s Christian Woman.
4. This Sunday, part 2 “Summer Missions day”
It is fitting, then, to call attention to our summer missionaries this Sunday. Many of us are gearing up to sell food, drink, and snacks (and maybe other items) during this Sunday’s lunch hour. After worship service, we will commission our missionaries in Worship Hall 3. Bring your family and friends to this festive occasion!
5. Finally, this Sunday, continue to register for our annual church retreat!
This year’s accommodations will be much better than last year’s. We’ll have units available for families with babies and young children. The walking distance between buildings will be much shorter. Also, we’ll be situated right next to the athletic facilities and fields, so you can walk to the basketball gym, the tennis and volleyball courts, the exercise rooms, etc.
Please register at retreat.ecanaan.org or fill out the registration forms. Registration is not complete until payment is received. Please make checks payable to “CTCC” and write “Retreat Fee” and the name of the main contact person on the memo line. Checks may be mailed to CTCC Retreat, 4405 Fortran Ct., San Jose CA 95134 attn: Ida Tsai for Retreat or given to EM retreat coordinators James Chang or Rachel Hung at Canaan. We will also put a box in Worship Hall 3 to collect registrations/checks this Sunday.
FEES: $160 (13 years old and above), $90 (3-12 years old), and free for 2 year old and below (no bed allocated).
ABOUT THE ENGLISH ADULT/YOUTH TRACKS
THEME: Good and Faithful (Matt 25:14-29)
Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness! – Jesus (Matthew 25:23)
Canaan’s English and Youth Ministries are emphasizing the importance of “stepping up” our service to the Lord and building English Ministries 2.0. We want our English ministries to be an upgrade over tired and failed English ministries. It takes work and effort! But we can get so caught up with serving that we forget how to invest energy in the areas that allow us to bear better quality fruit for God. Sometimes, we also serve out of fear, habit, and obligation rather than hope and joy. Instead of flourishing, we often wind up burying our spiritual gifts. In this year’s English and Youth retreat tracks, we want to encourage our attendees to “steward” our spiritual gifts for the better yield. We will hear and reflect on a series of messages that will equip us to use wisdom in our service as well as inspire us to serve with joyfulness.
Becky Chiang-Luoh is a Bay Area native and grew up attending Canaan as a youth. After graduating from UC Berkeley with a degree in Communications, she heard God’s call to go into ministry and currently serves with InterVarsity/USA at Cal ministering to fraternity and sorority students. Becky loves fun games, hosting friends at home with her husband David, drinking coffee, and all things design related. Have a great weekend! See you at Sunday worship!
BOOK TO PREPARE FOR THE RETREAT
Also, a good book to read in preparation for the retreat is Flourishing: Why Some People Thrive But Others Just Survive, by Stephen R. Graves. You can download the book by clicking the cover on the left or here: https://canaanpromise.files.wordpress.com/2015/06/flourishing_book.pdf
See you Sunday!
